Rourkela, the Steel City of Odisha, engulfed in the scenic beauty of hills and rivers houses the 5S and GMP standardised centralised kitchen of The Akshaya Patra Foundation (in collaboration with the Central Government and the State Government of Odisha). The kitchen was established on 15 November 2013 and was inaugurated on 23 February 2014 by Odisha Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik. The Steel Authority of India (SAIL), and Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has donated Rs 8.24-crore to The Akshaya Patra Foundation as part of their CSR initiative.

The recipes are standardised as per the feedback received from the schools. A separate food safety and quality team tastes every item and separate samples are kept aside.

The energy used for cooking is steam. The different forms of fuel used are briquettes. The quantity of steam generated for cooking is 6 ton approximately. Raw material, dry rations and vegetables are stored on pellets. Vegetables are procured daily so that the freshness is retained.
